Am I A Candidate For Mini Gastric Bypass?
Factors patients and bariatric surgeons commonly review when evaluating candidacy for One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB).
General Candidacy Criteria
Bariatric surgery is generally considered for adults with a BMI of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or greater with obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or obstructive sleep apnea. Candidacy for Mini Gastric Bypass specifically depends on individual anatomy, medical history, and surgeon judgment.
Factors Commonly Reviewed
- Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight history
- Type 2 diabetes status, duration, and current medications
- Acid reflux / GERD history and prior endoscopy findings
- Previous bariatric surgery (sleeve, band, balloon, bypass)
- Current GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound)
- Cardiac, pulmonary, and metabolic comorbidities
- Nutritional status and ability to commit to lifelong supplementation
- Psychological readiness and support systems
Situations Where Other Procedures May Be Considered
For patients with severe pre-existing reflux disease, large hiatal hernias, or other specific anatomical considerations, a surgeon may discuss Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or other procedures instead of Mini Gastric Bypass. Each patient's situation is unique and requires individualized evaluation.
What Happens In A Personalized Review
An educational candidacy review typically gathers basic medical information so the care team can describe procedures that may be relevant to your situation. It is not a clinical diagnosis or treatment plan. Formal candidacy is determined only after in-person evaluation by a qualified bariatric surgeon.
